Breathing through the Nose as a Snoring Solution

Posted on October 12, 2012

Effects of snoring to a person’s sleeping pattern may not be directly felt by the person suffering from a snoring problem, but it can be greatly felt by people who are sleeping in the same room as the person with the snoring problem. Loud and annoying snores can prevent another person from falling asleep or it can even wake a person from his or her sleep. If snoring problems are not treated or managed properly, those who are affected with the problem are at a very high risk for developing sleep disorders due to the disruption or alteration of their normal sleep and wake cycle.

Breathing through your nose, especially during sleep has numerous health benefits. In fact, primary nerves in a person’s body that is responsible for regulating breathing is located in the nasal passages. When a person normally breathes in and breathes out through his or her nose, it can help in improving awareness of airborne smells and it can even increase lung capacity, improve resistance to various diseases, and it can even help in relieving stress. If you do not normally breathe through your nose, regular practice of nose breathing can help in letting you get used to breathing through your nose involuntarily.

Steps in Practicing Nose Breathing

As mentioned above, regular practice of breathing through the nose can help in letting a person get used to breathing through the nose unaware and involuntarily.

  1. As much as possible, close your mouth if when relaxed or if you are not doing anything. Leaving your mouth partially open can draw air into your lungs and it gives your lings more work to do while breathing through the mouth. Breathing through the mouth can also provide inadequate resistance that can cause poorly circulated oxygen into the lung pockets.
  2. When breathing in through the nose, use your diaphragm and abdominal muscles. You will know that you are using your diaphragm and abdominal muscles when your belly expands as you inhale. Using your diaphragm and abdominal muscles when breathing can help in better circulated oxygen into the lung pockets and it can also help in strengthening your core or abdominal muscles.
  3. If you breathe in through your nose, then you can also breathe out through your nose. Breathing in through your nose can help filtering the air before entering your system, since the nasal passages produce a small amount of nitric oxide, which can help in killing bacteria.
  4. When sleeping, you can wear chin straps to hold your mouth together during sleep, thus promoting breathing through the nose.
