A nasal dilator is a device that can be put into your nose externally or internally to open your air passages. When the air passages of your nose are not obstructed, you will have no difficulty in breathing and the air coming in encounters less resistance. Nasal dilator is most commonly used by people who have snoring problem, to reduce the snoring issues but it’s also being marketed to athletes but for a different purpose, for which the evidence for effectiveness is not strong.

A nasal dilator has also be a proven success to help people who suffer with:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Sinus
  • Breathing from mouth
  • Nasal collapse
  • Allergies
  • Deviated septum

External Nasal Dilator

The most common type of nasal dilator that is widely used by people for snoring is external nasal dilator. It can be in the form of adhesive or nasal dilatorflexible material that exactly fits over your nose bridge. By placing it in this manner, it expands or widens or dilates the nasal passages, which helps in proper breathing and good sleep. Apart from snoring issues, there are many people who use nasal dilator at night to relieve nasal congestion caused by allergies or cold. The effectiveness of a nasal dilator varies from one individual to the other.

Effectiveness Of An External Nasal Dilator

To measure its effectives, there have been many studies and researches. One such study was carried on 30 people who had snoring issues by an external nasal dilator to measure its effectiveness in reducing the intensity of snoring. To measure the changes, they were all monitored by a sleep study also known as polysomnogram. The results were exceptionally good as more than 70 percent of people who participated had less or no snoring problem using an external nasal dilator.

Internal Nasal Dilator

However, when conducted a similar study on people using an internal nasal dilator, the results were not satisfactory and less than 15 percent of people had benefited from it to reduce their intensity of snoring.

Side Effects

Individuals using an external snoring device have reported some mild skin reaction from the adhesive used with these devices but overall it has few risks of any adverse side effects. Nasal dilators are safe and easy to use. The best thing about nasal dilators is that they are inexpensive to use as compared to other stop snoring solutions. However, if you have serious breathing problems or is suffering with sleep apnea, it is advised that you consult your doctor before using such nasal dilators.
