Snoring is one of the major sleep disorders that people deal with. Obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, you can blame anyone for yours or your partner’s snoring but a research done by the team of Brazilian scientists’ reports that high intake of salt might be responsible for noisy snores to occur at night. The study was done in Brazil at Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre, and it included various surveys and studies to find out the link between high salt diet and night time snoring.
Sleep Apnea and High Salt Diet Intake
Sleep apnea is the medical condition commonly associated with snoring. Due to sleep apnea your throat frequently closes that blocks the airflow during the night while you sleep. Sleep apnea condition may be a result of high salt diet intake. How? High salt diet causes more fluid formation in the body. When the person having excess of fluid, lies down in bed to sleep, the over fluid gets shifted and settled in the neck that disrupts free flow of the neck airway.
Sleep apnea affects your good night’s sleep which ultimately leads to huge snoring as well as tiredness throughout the following day. Sleep apnea has also been reported to have a relation with high blood pressure and heart diseases. Other than the salt intake the factors that could lead to the condition are:
Excessive use of sleeping aids and sleeping pills
Excessive body weight
Existence of a larger neck stature
Apart from these common factors, menopause in females also triggers risk for sleep apnea as hormonal changes during the menopause phase may lead to relaxation of the throat muscles. People having deviated septum or chronic nasal congestion are also suspected to have sleep apnea and snoring.
Sleep Apnea Is a Potentially Life-Threatening Condition
If you look at the statistics, sleep apnea has affected more than 18 million Americans. Most of the patients do not even notice that until they are made aware by their family or bed partner upon noticing unusually loud snoring. A research done at the University of Toronto suggest that if sleep apnea or chronic snoring is left undiagnosed and untreated, it can cut your life span up to 10-12 years. The condition is also responsible for heart failures revealed in a study conducted on heart patients.
A New and Improved Treatment for Sleep Apnea
From the study ‘high salt diet intake and snoring’ the scientists of Brazil have concluded a new and improved treatment for sleep apnea. They conducted a trial on the sleep apnea patients and found improvement in snoring with reduction of salt intake and intake of diuretic pills. On the basis of the study they are preparing a new treatment for sleep apnea. The treatment may prove one of the most effective remedies to snoring.
